October 08, 2009 - Second Annual Coastwise Mile Brings the Community Together - Press Release
Second Annual Coastwise Mile Brings the Community Together

LA JOLLA, CA (October 8, 2009) In the spirit of encouraging fitness, community and fun, the second annual Coastwise Mile kicked off at Scripps Park in La Jolla on Saturday, October 3, 2009. The morning, perfectly cool and sunny, commenced with the Doggy Costume Contest, where dogs of all kinds competed for a doggy gift basket. Best Costume went to dog owner Omar Zavala who was dressed as an ape and his canine companion as a banana.

The event offered numerous divisions for athletes of all abilities including Youth, Masters (40 ), Baby Jogger, Walking, Mutt Mile, and the all new 5k. The event also featured an enjoyable festival for the entire family to take part in.

"We are extremely pleased with the participation at this year's Coastwise Mile," says Coastwise Capital Group CEO Scott Kyle. "As important as the number of people, however, was the variety of participants. With the beautiful La Jolla Cove serving as a dramatic backdrop, you could witness three year olds with painted faces and ear-to-ear smiles running one minute, dogs pulling their owners along the course the next, only to be followed by elite Olympic-caliber competitors finishing in a sprint. The addition of the 5k division was a tremendous success. We look forward to many years of carrying forward our original vision of offering a healthy, fun-filled event for the entire community."

UCLA All-American Jon Rankin dominated the Men's Elite 1-Mile division with a finishing time of 4:09. The female division was just as exciting with returning champion Grace Padilla of Los Angeles, CA taking first with a time of 5:04. The always entertaining Corporate/Team Relay included teams Gut Check Fitness, Team Dunbar, La Jolla Sports Club, Cadence Drug Run and Angel Watch, with Team Dunbar coming in first place with an overall time of 17:17.

The all new 5k featured over 400 runners from the San Diego area and beyond, partaking in the criterium-style course through the historic La Jolla Village above the La Jolla Cove. The event wrapped up with the Toddler Trot where kids of all sizes competed against their peers on the grass. Full results and pictures can be found at www.coastwisemile.com.

A portion of the event proceeds directly benefit the Scripps Park Project and the San Diego Humane Society & SPCA. For more information, please visit www.scrippspark.com or www.sdhumane.org.
