Coastwise Prize Scholarship Winners Announced
LA JOLLA, CA (February 10, 2009) The Coastwise Prize for Investing Excellence Awards Ceremony was held this past Wednesday, February 4, 2009, where the top twenty finalists attended and the top three scholarship winners were announced. The scholarship required local La Jolla sophomores to write an essay on what they considered to be their top three most important goals after high school and how they planned to invest their time and money toward achieving those goals. The scholarship's aim is to promote financial literacy among today's youth by emphasizing themes of money management, wealth creation and personal financial responsibility.
The ceremony included dinner and special guest appearance by Padres pitcher Chris Young, who gave a profound speech on the importance of pursuing a college degree and following one's dreams. John de Beck of the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education also spoke before the finalists, their families and teachers, reminding all that by making educated choices today, one adds incremental value to their future. High attendance by local high school faculty, families and local leaders was a brilliant showing of support for all of the remarkably accomplished finalists. "We were very pleased with the response we received from the students and more importantly the positive impact we continue to have on those in our community by making financial literacy one of the primary life skills we teach our youth," says Scott Kyle, CEO of Coastwise Capital Group, LLC.
Coming in 1st place was Miriam Michelle Million, 2nd place, Rachel Locke and 3rd place, Will Yashar. The three winners are students from The Preuss School at UCSD, La Jolla Country Day School & La Jolla High School, respectively. Their scholarship money will be immediately invested in a 529 College Fund to put towards college tuition and expenses. By investing their winnings, the scholarship awardees will be reminded of the importance of saving and putting capital to work in effective ways.
The Coastwise Prize for Investing Excellence was designed to prompt considerations for the future and to reward those who truly exhibit passion and intelligent thought about investing and financial literacy - topics of more importance than ever, in light of the current challenges facing the U.S. economy.
